excellent education for everyone

A clean sweep to success !

In February, learningSkills Employability and Careers ran a course for long-term unemployed adults who wanted to enter the cleaning industry.
Working in partnership with a local cleaning company Gateshead LearnindSkills  designed a bespoke programme based around employability skills, the cleaning industry, health and safety and customer service skills. The course was advertised through local Job Centres and Economic Development and in total 22 learners attended the programme.

The course

Over three weeks learners gained real work experience in a BICS Industry Approved Training Centre, gained valuable health and safety knowledge from training with the Fire Authority and after an intensive employability skills week attended a real interview with the cleaning company. All learners achieved their qualification in Facilities Services and many of them have moved in to further training or employment.

Cherylea Tinnion was one of the learners on the programme. Cherylea, 22, had a brief work history, mainly in retail or the hospitality industry. She demonstrated a real drive to succeed and emerged as a natural team leader and problem solver. At the end of the programme she applied for an Cleaning Apprenticship role with Bede Community School. She was delighted when she was told that she had been successful; “I am over the moon. It is a fantastic opportunity for me to learn new skills and train at the same time!”

Her 12 month Apprenticeship starts in April and the employer has already decided to develop her in to further roles.
